Sited on 122 acres adjacent to Rock Hall, Maryland, an historic tobacco port and fishing center, this private summer retreat enjoys unimpeded panoramic Westerly views twenty miles across the Chesapeake Bay to the skyline of Baltimore. Because of the long “fetch” across the Bay and the increasing potential for strong wave action onto the low-lying ground, the entire house is raised well above the current 100-year flood elevation. Inspired by the vernacular working buildings and boat sheds of watermen found in Rock Hall and around the Chesapeake Bay in such places as Smith and Tangier Islands, this contemporary house was composed to recall the casual arrangement of a village of traditional water dependent structures all connected by elevated boardwalks and piers.
