In its previous life, the “Gamekeeper’s Cottage‚ was a deteriorating, non-descript, functional, appendage to the Mayor’s House, a romantic 1740′s log cabin. As part of the renovation to bring the appendage into use as a viable guest suite for the Inn at Little Washington, Good Architecture devised the concept of adding the folly of an outdoor dining pavilion serving double-duty as an elegant, protected, approach and entrance as well as a place to enjoy meals in privacy while gazing out at the pristine view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Chef Patrick O’Connell reports that “the ‘appendage’ has taken on a new life” and Guests tell him that “they feel as if they are on safari as they watch the deer come to eat the apples from the trees all around.” The sense of serenity and closeness to nature extends to the interiors as well. Designed in an “elegant rusticity” with wood paneling, a new stone fireplace, and loft bedroom with a second bath, the cottage feels like an adult’s fantasy of a tree house.
