Located on Gibson Island, north of Annapolis, Maryland, this major renovation and addition is based on the owners’ deep admiration of formal Italian villas and Tuscan hill towns. Save for a grand Living Hall with hewn timber trusses and ceilings, the house was truly a white elephant in terms of today’s expected amenities. Consequently, major redesign of the existing structure was required to accommodate the owners’ functional requirements. Overall, the form and architecture of the house was inspired and guided by many Italian sources ranging from Palladio’s Villa Barbaro at Maser to the simple, vernacular country, stone farmhouse.
