Sakura, meaning "cherry tree" was designed as a private weekend retreat for an individual with a deep appreciation of Zen philosophy, the tea ceremony, and its influence on Japanese domestic architecture. The design of this small house was inspired by 16th Century Japanese "Sukiya," or "Tea House," architecture and attempts to express the ideals of "wabi"-a set of ideals which converted the tea ceremony into an occasion for withdrawal from material concerns and worship of simplicity, purity, and refinement.
