With spectacular westerly sunsets over the broad tidal Potomac River, the clients desired to replace a falling-down screened porch with a new, enclosed porch and roof terrace that would capture the panoramic views. When fully open, the French casement windows of the enclosed porch virtually disappear from the primary view angles, transforming the space into what is essentially a screened porch as desired. The upper level open porches overhang the south-facing glass providing solar shading and allowing those windows to remain open and protected in a summer rain. At night, the project is illuminated like a softly glowing lantern.
